This might be the first/ second or third year we are away from home during Chinese New Year and from a personal experience, I know it can be quite upsetting to be far away from our loved ones. This time of the year is especially important for us- Chinese, because it’s suppose to be a reunion with our family and here we are gathered in a rented ballroom with relics that barely remind us of what we are celebrating. There is no sense of any CNY spirit outside of our gathering, but that’s what makes it all really heartwarming, to know that we have one another! So the CNY spirit will live on inside us, even as we filter out of this room towards the cold cold Durham winter breeze!
Moreover, it won’t be a real Singaporean CNY celebration without Lo Hei Yu Sheng! The Yu Sheng experience is such a unique part of our culture, this is a tradition that we will always have within our society. Everyone around the table has to stand up and use their chopsticks to mix and toss the yu sheng. With each toss, you have to shout out your wishes for the new year like ‘to get a first class’ or ‘ to win the lottery’. But at the end of the day, we had more fun tossing the food at each other than really eating it!
This year was extra special because we made our own yu sheng. The Singapore Society execs stayed up till the wee hours of the night to prepare those customised yu sheng and it was all good fun to make it while we bond over shredding carrots/ cucumber/ radish, roasting peanuts, peeling pomelo, deep-frying prawn crackers, etc.!
Once again, here's wishing everyone a HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR and may we stuff ourselves silly with more hot pot and dumplings, perfect for this wintery weather :D
