DUSS is not just any other society. It is a community for Singaporeans, by Singaporeans. Throughout the length of your stay here, DUSS will provide a platform for you to connect with fellow Singaporeans, celebrate both UK and SG festivals (think Diwali, Guy Fawkes, CNY, etc) and in general, act as a causeway to a wider support network. For many of you, this will be your first time living alone in a different country with a culture vastly different from the one you're used to. It may get stressful at times - learning to adapt to a new environment, different habits, different customs, schoolwork, etc, and with your pre-existing support network no longer in immediate reach, it may be hard to cope with all these changes. Hopefully if need be, DUSS can have the honour to serve as your surrogate family and help you ease into this new environment so you no longer feel like a lost sheep.
For the upcoming academic year of 2016/17, we have loads of exciting activities planned out for you. There'll be loads of pre-departure events including but not limited to camps, pageants and sporting events, as well as events in Durham and Stockton campuses when school starts. Socials, a very British tradition, are a given. Obviously. Meticulously planned by the exec, they're bound to be LOADS of fun.
The Sunday before, a general pre-departure briefing was held by the British Council with information about visa applications etc. Hopefully you all have managed to clarify everything that you were unsure of. However, if you were unable to make it then, fret not, for DUSS is organising its own pre departure briefing this Tuesday on the 26th of July at the ERC institute (#06-01, 30 Prinsep Street). Registration starts at 6.30 pm, while the actual event runs from 7-9pm. We will be giving Q&A sessions about Durham life in general so if you are free, do come along and ask us about anything and everything under the sun. JSA (Jack Studies Abroad) will also be there to answer any questions you have about visa and BRP applications (super important okay).
Below, you will also find a pre-departure booklet painstakingly prepared by DUSS specially for you guys. It contains loads of useful information, but if you still have any queries, feel free to contact any of the exec and fire away. They are friendly and don't bite ! ;)
Hope to see you guys on Tuesday.
